So let me share the details with you/Her er noen detaljer:
Pattern: Snowflake block designed by Rebecca of Sew Festive Handmade. A very beautiful and complex pattern!
Method: Paper pieced center block consisting of 24 sections with a total of 96 fabric pieces (is this a lot, or what?). Hand quilted with DMC floss. Envelope closure on back.
Sydd sammen med papirsøm - 24 deler med totalt 96 stoffbiter. Ganske mye, ikke sant? Håndquilted med DMC broderigarn.
Fabric: Various stuff from my stash. The red pointsettias (and green in center) is from Alpine Wonderland by Riley Blake. The green houndstooth around the edge is also from Riley Blake. Background is Kona White. The fabric is left over from the pieces I have cut out for the Vintage Holiday QAL over at Fabric Mutt.
Favorite part: Definately the hand quilting. It was my first attempt at hand quilting (I've done some embroidery, so wasn't a big stretch) and I think it turned out great (if I may say so). I must say, though, that I was happy it was a small project because I don't have a thimble and I quickly felt like I needed one.
Least favorite part: Trying to get the center of the block to allign. It didn't. I wasn't precise enough when piecing the blocks and with a whopping 16 points coming in to the center there were too many seams to fiddle with. So I made do and covered the worst bit with a festive button.
I don't think anyone will think about it too much when looking at the big picture - or what do you say?
And just a final note about this project - I was debating between Kona Snow (slightly warmer) and Kona White (very, very white) for this, and decided White was the best looking option. But I was very hesitant, because this will be on the couch in a season of hot cocoa drinking and cookie/chocolate eating galore. So what did I do while making this pillow? I picked it up to finish quilting right after eating a peanut butter sandwhich and totally got a stain on the white part. I forgot to photoshop it out, so you can see if you find it on the photo above:)
OK, since I am so pleased with this project, I am going to show it off in bloglandia. I hope you don't think I brag too much, I really am quite modest about my skills... I will be linking up to:
What a gorgeous cushion - definitely works as a summery Christmas star - being from NZ where Christmas is in the middle of the Summertime it appeals to me more than traditional Christmas greens and reds.
ReplyDeletegorgeous star, love the design and fabrics you've chosen, and the button in the middle (you'd never know it was covering up not-matching points!!). I'm from Australia, so our Christmas is HOT - this cushion is perfect for us as it is so happy, bright and summery. thanks for sharing. Cat
ReplyDeleteThat is a STUNNING cushion! I love that it is christmassy without being too christmassy and could live on your sofa all year round. Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteLove that block....it looks beautiful...I haven't done paper piecing yet...its' on list....I see you are doing Fabric Mutt Vintage Christmas...see you there :)
ReplyDeleteLovely. I hope someone from my Bee sees this as it would be a lovely star block for my quilt.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful hand-quilting. On my list of things to try :)
ReplyDeleteWow! I can see why you love it. It is beautiful and the hand quilting makes it so special! I've never tried hand quilting. I found you through Small Blog Meet! www.paperstarfish.prettyposies.com
ReplyDeleteThat's a gorgeous pillow!! Love the colours and your hand quilting looks perfect!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful pillow. The hand quilting is definitely my favorite. Your stitches look so perfect!
ReplyDeleteIt's beautiful! It reminds me of origami irises.
ReplyDeleteEeeee! Your pillow ended up so beautiful! Your fabric choices made it much more of an impact to look at than my original snowflake plan. I think I'll have to make another one and follow your lead!
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, 96 pieces! Phew! But that's the beauty of paper piecing...complex patterns that make people go WOW. This certainly fit the bill :)
That is an amazing cushion! SO beautiful!!
ReplyDeleteTHIS. IS. BEAUTIFUL. I wouldn't have even notice the center points had you not said anything. I love the colors on this.
ReplyDeleteLove your pillow! What a great start to the Christmas crafting!
ReplyDeleteJust popped over from the Small Blog Meet - loving being able to discover new blogs like these! The pillow is beautiful, I love how it looks sort of modern and traditional at the same time :) Very impressive!
ReplyDeleteGreat pillow and so many little pieces.
ReplyDeleteThis is just stunning! Beautiful hand quilting. I have been paper piecing quite a bit recently and yes, 96 pieces is a LOT of pieces. And I just read the best hint from Lynne at Lily's Quilts about make the centers meet. You put a pin to align the pieces, then put your sewing machine needle where the pin was, and sew from the center out to the edge instead of the edge to the center. Does that make sense? It was one of those lightbulb moments for me, like why didn't I ever think of that before?? Anyway, I think the button is the perfect addition, whether the center is aligned or not!
ReplyDeleteHi! I am visiting from Small Blog Meet. LOVE YOUR PILLOW. It is just gorgeous!
ReplyDelete(Here from TGIFF) That is beautiful! And the fact that the points don't match up perfectly is very well covered by that button -- it looks totally intentional.
ReplyDeleteThat makes me want to try paper piecing!
Lovely pillow! I always have a hard time with my centers too - I'll have to try the advice from Live a Colorful Life above. I liked your idea of adding the button.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! Hope you don't mind but I pinned it. Yep, loving it that much. Thanks for linking up to TGIFF. :)
ReplyDeleteWow!! That's absolutely fantastic! The hand stitching is really well done and adds a remarkable amount of punch to the finished piece. The star in the middle may have been meant to cover mis-matches, but it's PERFECT in the overall effect!
ReplyDeleteSuch pretty colors. It is a wonderful pillow.
ReplyDeleteHi, I found you through the Small Blog Meet. We have both been blogging about the same amount of time.
ReplyDeleteI love that you are doing a Dear Jane Quilt - I've been thinking about starting one, so I'll be very interested to follow your progress
Visiting from Lily's Quilts as well. Wow, ya, what a pillow! It's beautiful! Congratulations - and good idea about using a button in the middle:).
ReplyDeleteEn flott pute, den er virkelig utsøkt! Jeg fant deg gjennom Lily's Quilt.
ReplyDeleteThat pillow is beautiful!!! You did a great job! Also, I think it looks like the button was supposed to be there. :)
